Preaseason Week 3, Monday WNBA and MLB News and Notes
Aug 24th, 2026

⚾ MLB

Rockies @ Nationals — 6:45 PM ET, Nationals Park

  • Pitchers: Ryan Feltner (RHP, 5.59 ERA) vs. Cade Cavalli (RHP, 3.38 ERA)
  • Weather: ~79°F, wind out of the ESE at just 7 mph — negligible impact, no carry boost.
  • Context: Colorado is deep in a lost season and playing out the string; Washington's rebuild continues to lean on young arms like Cavalli. Motivation tilts toward the home Nats trying to build innings and confidence down the stretch.

Red Sox @ Marlins — 6:40 PM ET, loanDepot Park

  • Pitchers: Ranger Suarez vs. Miami TBD.
  • Weather: Indoor/climate-controlled park (roof typically closed in Miami heat) — 87°F outside, so no wind factor expected.
  • Trends: Boston is slugging — 12 homers and a .478 slugging mark over their last 10 games. Miami's offense has cooled (10 HR, .360 SLG over last 10), though Heriberto Hernandez has been a bright spot (3 HR, 9 RBI over that stretch).

Rays @ Tigers — 6:40 PM ET, Comerica Park

  • Pitchers: Drew Rasmussen (2.79 ERA) vs. Kumar (George) Montero (3.32 ERA)
  • Weather: 74°F, wind NNW at 13.4 mph — approaching the 15 mph threshold, blowing across/in from center-left. Worth watching for its effect on fly-ball carry, especially to the pull side for lefty bats.
  • Injury note: Tigers ace Riley Greene (hamstring) is completing a rehab progression and due back in Detroit today to continue ramping up — not yet activated. Casey Mize left his last start after just 2⅔ innings with a right ankle sprain and his next turn is uncertain.

Rangers @ White Sox — 7:40 PM ET, Rate Field

  • Pitchers: Kumar Rocker vs. Jose Urquidy (5.06 ERA)
  • Weather: ~73–75°F, wind blowing out around 12 mph — a modest boost for fly balls, but Rate Field is fairly sheltered by surrounding structures, so the practical effect is usually muted.
  • Motivation/trends: Texas is squarely in a tight AL Wild Card fight — every game carries extra weight. Chicago is defending a division lead at home (39-26 there) and just walked off the Mets in back-to-back games, riding a 1-game win streak into the series. Cal Quantrill has been outstanding for Texas, extending a scoreless-innings streak across five straight starts.

Guardians @ Angels — 9:38 PM ET, Angel Stadium

  • Pitchers: George Klassen vs. Parker Messick
  • Weather: Warm, low-to-mid 90s expected in Anaheim; historically a mild, low-wind environment.
  • No major new injury notes surfaced for either club today beyond standard day-to-day maintenance.

Cubs @ Diamondbacks — 9:40 PM ET, Chase Field

  • Pitchers: Sandy Alcantara vs. Merrill Kelly (8-11, 5.37 ERA)
  • Weather: Indoor/dome — roof closed, zero weather impact.
  • Trends: Arizona has real thump lately — 12 HR and a .465 SLG over its last 10 games, with Corbin Carroll batting .400 in that span and Gabriel Moreno slashing .325/.391/.600. Chicago counters with 19 homers of its own over the last 10 and a .452 team slugging mark. This is a legitimate offensive shootout environment even with the dome neutralizing wind.

Pirates @ Padres — 9:40 PM ET, Petco Park

  • Pitchers: Not yet finalized for Pittsburgh; San Diego's rotation remains in flux.
  • Injury note: Padres starters Joe Musgrove (Tommy John recovery) and Corey Pivetta (elbow inflammation) are both progressing — Musgrove trending toward a fourth rehab start and Pivetta throwing bullpens this week, but neither active tonight.
  • Weather: Marine layer typical at Petco; wind tends to knock balls down, generally a pitcher-neutral-to-favorable park.

Twins @ Athletics — 9:40 PM ET, Sutter Health Park (West Sacramento)

  • Pitchers: Jhoan Duran-type bullpen usage possible for either side; check final posting closer to first pitch.
  • No major weather flags; inland Sacramento heat is the bigger factor than wind.

Phillies @ Mariners — 9:40 PM ET, T-Mobile Park

  • Weather: Retractable roof park — Seattle's marine air and any drizzle risk usually prompt a closed roof, neutralizing wind as a factor.

Reds @ Giants — 9:45 PM ET, Oracle Park

  • Pitchers: Chase Burns (confirmed) vs. San Francisco TBD
  • Weather: ~63°F, wind blowing out around 9 mph — under the 15 mph threshold, and Oracle's marine air/heavy dimensions typically suppress power anyway despite the "blowing out" reading.
  • Note: Burns carries an elite strikeout rate and has fanned at least six batters in four straight starts, working against a Reds lineup... wait, he's pitching for Cincinnati against a Giants lineup that's carried the NL's lowest August OPS.

Broader injury watch (not playing today, but market-moving all week): The Yankees are banged up — Giancarlo Stanton (dual calf strains) may be done for the year, Aaron Judge (rib stress fracture) is doing light hitting off a tee, Max Fried (elbow bone bruise) threw a 26-pitch bullpen, Ryan Weathers just went on the 15-day IL, and Ryan McMahon (thumb sprain) is out. Reds' Spencer Steer (wrist) is increasingly unlikely to play again in 2026.

🏀 WNBA

Valkyries @ Lynx — 8:00 PM ET, Target Center (Minneapolis)

  • Standings/motivation: Minnesota enters at an MLB-best-caliber 31-7, riding momentum after beating Washington on the road Friday. Golden State sits 25-11, currently the East's — sorry, West's — No. 2 seed, coming off a loss to Chicago Friday that snapped their long win streak.
  • Injuries: Minnesota's Emma Čechová is out for the season (torn right ACL). Courtney Williams (right foot) was ruled out Sunday after getting hurt in Friday's win — her first missed game of the season. The good news for the Lynx: Napheesa Collier is off the injury report and back in after sitting Friday for rest. Golden State has just one name out — Iliana Rupert, who is out for the season (pregnancy).
  • Recent form: Olivia Miles has been red-hot for Minnesota (24 points, 7 assists, 3 steals in the win over Washington); Natasha Howard also contributing across the board.

Dream @ Sparks — 10:00 PM ET, Crypto.com Arena (Los Angeles), Peacock

  • Standings/motivation: Atlanta is 24-13 and riding a 3-game win streak after beating Phoenix on the road Saturday, with Angel Reese exploding for 31 points, 14 rebounds and 4 steals in that game. Los Angeles is 13-24 and struggling, though they did upset Connecticut at home Saturday.
  • Injuries: Brionna Jones remains the lone name of note on Atlanta's report (knee, has been out much of the season). Reese appears fully healthy after her earlier-season ankle scare in July.
  • Context: Playoff seeding stakes are real for Atlanta with the regular season winding down (ends Sept. 24); Los Angeles is mostly playing for pride and evaluation at this point in a lost year.

🏈 Football Later This Week

The NFL is in Preseason Week 3 — the "roster bubble" week. Teams are trimming to 53 by August 30, so expect most true starters to see limited-to-no snaps, with backups and camp bodies logging heavy minutes. That typically means more variance and lower total-scoring efficiency than a "normal" NFL game — worth factoring into any total or player-prop thinking.

Thursday, Aug. 27:

  • Steelers @ Bills, 7:00 PM ET (NFLN)
  • Patriots @ Browns, 8:00 PM ET (Prime)
  • 49ers @ Raiders, 8:00 PM ET
  • Rams @ Chargers, 10:00 PM ET (NFLN)

Friday, Aug. 28:

  • Commanders @ Ravens, 6:00 PM ET (NFLN)
  • Texans @ Panthers, Falcons @ Dolphins, Bucs @ Jaguars, Giants @ Jets — all 7:00–7:30 PM window
  • Saints @ Cowboys, Seahawks @ Chiefs, Cardinals @ Packers — 8:00 PM ET window
  • Bengals @ Eagles, 8:00 PM ET (CBS)
  • Vikings @ Broncos, 9:00 PM ET (NFLN)

Saturday, Aug. 29 (Preseason finale):

  • Lions @ Colts, 1:00 PM ET (NFLN)
  • Bears @ Titans, 6:00 PM ET (NFLN)

College football's Week 0 also kicks off Saturday, Aug. 29 — the first true action of the 2026 CFB season, with most of the country waiting until Sept. 5 to open. Worth checking back closer to kickoff for depth-chart clarity, as Week 0 openers can carry unusual uncertainty around new-starter debuts.
