MLB Baseball Predictions: Seattle Mariners Beat Long Odds Tonight
Jul 22nd, 2010

It’s been one of the best years ever in baseball betting for professional gamblers. Luckily for the online bookmakers, the square have had another losing year.

Speaking of sharps, one of their top advisors Matt Rivers of OffshoreInsiders.com has a play for Thursday is on the Mariners. They are getting 150 at home to Boston.

I’ll take this price back and fade John Lackey. There aren’t many bigger Lackey fans out there than yours truly as the former Angel hurler is a bulldog and a guy that can be great but this season has been half a debacle and to get the Ichiro’s at home plus a decent amount of money is worth a shot.

Yes Lackey was great last time out as he obviously had his juices flowing against Cliff Lee and the Rangers but one game does not make a starter and here 3,000 miles across the country could be a difficult task. No doubt the Mariners offense does not come close to the Rangers and Lackey is up against a struggling, struggling lefty in Ryan Rowland Smith but the BoSox are banged up and not worthy of this type of chalk right now. I’m not saying that Terry Francona’s club isn’t competent as they still have Big Papi, Youkilis and Beltre but without Pedroia they’re not the same team and therefore all in all this is a lot to lay.

Rowland-Smith is at least not some inexperienced kid. No matter how poor the southpaw has been he has been around the block and last season was even very good for Seattle. Things are far from good now there is no denying that but at Safeco today I can see him being decent enough.

The Seattle lefthander has been better at home this season than on the road, not great at all but decent enough and I can see him stand up enough to the challenge to keep the M’s in this thing throughout.

The pick: Seattle +150 at BetUs

For more information: Two more winners are here on the diamond for Thursday as I continue to plug away and stay in that plus column. A couple of games in the National League and at least 500,000* of profit. 300,000* Milwaukee-Pittsburgh along with a 200,000* Washington-Cincinnati. Are the Pirates serious? Can the Nats win two in a row? Or are we about to see a run-line burial or two? EZ Money!

Ohio State tops Iowa and Penn State is favorites to win the Big 10 Conference according to the Vegas betting odds.

The American League offers up five games on Thursday, with Minnesota at Baltimore, Toronto at Detroit, Kansas City at the Yankees, Boston at Seattle, and the Angels at Texas. Jered Weaver (9-5, 3.16 ERA) will go up against Cliff Lee (8-4, 2.59 ERA) in that  Angels/Rangers matchup. Righthander Weaver put an end to a two-game losing streak by beating the Mariners last time out; Weaver gave up just two runs on six hits over seven innings of work in that win over Seattle. Lefthander Lee had to settle for a no-decision against the Red Sox last time out despite giving up just two runs on six hits over his nine innings of work. Lee walked one and struck out six batters in that contest.

The National League schedule for Thursday then has Colorado at Florida, Washington at Cincinnati, San Diego at Atlanta, Milwaukee at Pittsburgh, San Francisco at Arizona, the Mets at the Dodgers, and Philadelphia at St. Louis. The Phillies will go with Cole Hamels (7-7, 3.63 ERA) in that last matchup, while the Cardinals counter with Adam Wainwright (14-5, 2.02 ERA). College Football Wagering Tips: Hawaii Middle of Pack in WAC
Jul 22nd, 2010

Wagering on college football continues to be a boon for bettors. Super sportsbook Bodog continues their previews and football predictions with a 2010 season outlook on the team from the 5-0 state.

The Hawaii Warriors are next up in our 2010 college football outlook. The Warriors struggled in 2009, going 6-7 (3-5 in the WAC). They did, however, win four of their final five games, so there’s some potential for growth.

Quarterback remains the team’s biggest question mark, as several players have stepped under center over the past two seasons. Bryant Moniz will probably get first crack in 2010. He’ll at least have a brilliant receiving corps to work with, including Greg Salas (106 catches, 1590 yards, eight touchdowns last year). Moniz might not have much time to throw to Salas, however, as the offensive line lost four starters.

The defense will probably go through highs and lows. The front seven is pretty inexperienced and should suffer through growing pains. The secondary might be able to pick up some slack, though, as all four starters return.

Grandmaster Sports Handicapper Joe Duffy’s expert take: There’s no getting over that Rainbow loss of June Jones. We have Hawaii projected to finish in a fifth place tie in the WAC with Utah State. Frankly though, they are no better than the No. 5 team in the Western Athletic Conference.

They could finish as low as 8th behind Idaho. The middle of the pack is close in the WAC.

Expert College Football Picks: LA Tech Destined For 4th in WAC Conference
Jul 22nd, 2010

Perhaps 4chan is family oriented, but Bodog college football previews continue to be information oriented.

The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs are next in line for our 2010 college football outlook. Louisiana Tech is trying to rebound from a 4-8 (3-5) season.

First-year head coach Sonny Dykes is bringing a new philosophy to town, which will see the Bulldogs shift from a run-oriented team to a pass-happy squad. The biggest problem? Who the heck is going to throw the ball? There’s a handful of incumbents on the roster, but none seem capable of running the offense Dykes envisions. It could be a wasted year for a solid group of wide receivers.

The “D” leaves much to be desired. Run stopping needs to become a priority, and the coaching staff knows it; they benched linebacker Adrien Cole during spring drills despite him being the team’s leading returning tackler. That should send the message pretty quickly.

Grandmaster Sports Handicapper Joe Duffy’s expert take: LA Tech is solidly ensconced as the fourth best team. The coaching change brings some uncertainty, but while they are not as good as the top three, they are much more talented than the cluster below them.

Yahoo Down, College Football Picks Up on Utah State
Jul 22nd, 2010

How ironic? Yahoo down literally and figuratively. Stock shares of Yahoo! and the actual website were down today. Forget your Yahoo account and worry about the bank account by roughing up the bookmakers.

Bodog continues their college football outlook with the Utah State Aggies. Utah State went 4-8 (3-5) last season and will be gunning for improvement under second-year head coach Gary Anderson.

Offensively, the Aggies are set. The ranked 12th in the country in total offense last year and eight starters return, so more fireworks should be expected. Diondre Borel tossed 17 touchdowns to just four picks last year, and he can run too (11 rushing touchdowns in his past two seasons). Unfortunately, leading rusher Robert Turbin was injured in the spring and will miss the first third or so of the season.

While the offense was great, the defense was at the other end of the spectrum. The Aggies “D” was 113th in total defense, so at least there’s room for improvement. Doing a better job getting to the quarterback would be a great start. Get your college football odds in the Bodog Sportsbook!

Grandmaster Sports Handicapper Joe Duffy’s expert take: Well they are the best Aggies in the conference. They will finish in a dead heat with Hawaii for 5th place, though Idaho is just a notch behind.

Pitt Panthers, West Virginia Battle For Big East Football Crown
Jul 22nd, 2010

The winds of change are blowing for NCAA football betting fans assessing futures for the Big East. With some big names leaving in the offseason – especially from one particular school – it looks like as many as five teams have a shot to win.

Let’s have a look at the NCAA football odds to win the Big East among the top contenders.

CINCINNATI (6 to 1)

The Bearcats were a special team in 2010 but it looks like all the pieces that made them special are gone. Quarterback Tony Pike is a Carolina Panther; Mardy Gilyard will now catch passes from Sam Bradford with the St. Louis Rams. And Brian Kelly famously put a knife in Cincy’s heart late last year when he bolted for Notre Dame. Just too many important parts are gone for the Bearcats to remain at full strength.

CONNECTICUT (3 to 1)

Keep an eye on Jordan Todman at halfback. He could have a monster season running behind an outstanding line in Connecticut. The Huskies haven’t officially settled on a starting quarterback as of press time, so it’s hard to fully endorse their sleeper potential until we get a better idea of how their passing game will work. They also aren’t good at stopping the pass.

PITTSBURGH (5 to 2)

Some sports betting fans will argue that Pittsburgh has the conference’s best player in Dion Lewis. The kid ran for 1,799 and scored 17 times as a freshman. Dave Wannstedt is confident that Pat Bostik can handle the pro-style offense this season. But we’ll see. If he struggles, opponents won’t respect the aerial attack and could stack the box against Lewis.

RUTGERS (6 to 1)

Even if 2010 doesn’t become the breakthrough season for Rutgers, that moment isn’t far away. They have some exciting youngsters – particularly the Swiss Army knife known as Mohamed Sanu. He’s a vertical threat but he was also used in the Wildcat formation last year. Rutgers’ “D” is high on speed and fairly deep but it’s weak at linebacker. That’s scary when you play in the same conference as Dion Lewis and Noel Devine.

SOUTH FLORIDA (6 to 1)

Is South Florida the most complete team in the Big East? Hardly. But it has a unique, dynamic player in B.J. Daniels. He can do everything with the football from the quarterback position and will run behind a line that returns four of five starters. So you never know what South Florida may do.

WEST VIRGINIA (5 to 2)

My betting advice: lean West Virginia’s way this year. We know they’ll run the ball like crazy with Noel Devine set for a banner senior season and four of five starters back on the O-line. Geno Smith may be ho-hum, if Devine comes through, he can just play game manager like Greg McElroy at Alabama. His arm accuracy is a nice fit for the offense. West Virginia may also have the Big East’s top defense – especially since 10 starters return.

Today’s free pick

Several different teams could threaten to win the Big East but I think West Virginia has the edge over Pittsburgh because it should be sturdier at quarterback.

Handicappers Football Picks: New Mexico State a Laughingstock
Jul 22nd, 2010

As bleak as it is for gamblers who bet without expert handicapping advice, things are just as bad for fans of New Mexico State. One would have to have the sense of humor of Alexadra Wentworth to suffer through their games.

The Bodog 2010 college football outlook continues with the New Mexico State Aggies. The Aggies went just 3-10 last season (1-7 in the WAC) and will have a tough time turning it around this year.

New Mexico State suffers from a one-dimensional offense. The passing game is lacklustre at best, and this year incumbent Jeff Fleming will compete with Matt Christian for quarterbacking duties. The Aggies can run the ball a bit—Seth Smith returns (1,016 yards last year)—but it’s not enough to threaten many opponents. The offense finished last in the country in yards and points last year. The run defense leaked like a sieve last year, and there’s little reason to believe 2010 will be any different.

On the plus side, New Mexico State features a very strong cornerback duo in Davon House and Jonte Green. They can’t do everything alone, but opposing passers should have some difficulty navigating the Aggies’ secondary.

Grandmaster Sports Handicapper Joe Duffy’s expert take: Well, they might be better than San Jose State, but that’s the best we can say. Anything higher than an 8th place finish would be a surprise.

San Jose State Worse Than a Firestick
Jul 22nd, 2010

One would have to have been blinded by a firestick plant to not notice how bad the San Jose State football team is. Of course professional gamblers know that such teams are often smart to bet on. Yes we said to bet on. Here is Bodog’s preview of their season.

The San Jose Spartans are next in today’s 2010 college football outlook. The Spartans struggled through a 2-10 (1-7) season last year, but with new head coach Mike MacIntyre on board, there’s hope for a turnaround.

The passing game should be solid. The receiving corps is deep, led by senior Marquis Avery and sophomore Josh Harrison. There will probably be a three-way battle under center, though, between Jordan La Secla, Matt Faulkner, and Dasmen Stewart. The running game, however, leaves much to be desired—it produced just 76 yards per game in 2009. That’s simply not good enough to cut it, even in the WAC.

On the other side of the ball, San Jose State was porous against the run, allowing a whopping 259 yards per game. The Spartans will be lucky to match last year’s win total if that trend continues.

Grandmaster Sports Handicapper Joe Duffy’s expert take: The Spartans are just plain bad. Luckily New Mexico State is almost as pitiful, so Jose is not a lock for last, but that’s likely their destiny.

Expert Picks College Football: Sun Belt a Two Horse Race MTSU and Troy
Jul 22nd, 2010

The best college football professional betting resources will tell you that simply betting on marquee teams is a mistake that squares make. Bodog continues with small conference previews.

This week continues our 2010 college football previews, beginning with a Sun Belt Conference overview. It should be a two-horse race in the Sun Belt this season, with Troy and Middle Tennessee State vying for top spot.

The Troy Trojans are once again in the driver’s seat. They deserve it after winning four consecutive Sun Belt Championships. The team has suffered some key losses, though—namely quarterback Levi Brown, the school’s all-time leading passer. His replacement, Jamie Hampton, has plenty of standouts at both receiver and running back to count on.

Troy’s biggest challenge will come in the form of Middle Tennessee State. The Blue Raiders nipped at Troy’s heels last season but lost the head-to-head matchup. Star quarterback Dwight Dasher returns after racking up 36 total touchdowns last season. He’ll be passing and running behind an offensive line that features four starters from last year.

Grandmaster Sports Handicapper Joe Duffy’s expert take: Middle Tennessee and Troy will battle for the title, with MTSU coming out on top. One thing is certain, Western Kentucky is one of the worst teams in Division I. Florida Atlantic is the biggest question mark. They could finish as high as third, but may also be a bottom feeder.

NCAA Football Predictions: Maryland Terapins At Bottom of ACC Atlantic Division
Jul 22nd, 2010

The National Hurricane Center can only hope to accurately predict the path of Tropical Storm Bonnie as well as top college football bettors have the gridiron the last several years.

We begin Bodog’s ACC football previews here at Bodog with the Maryland Terrapins, a team that appears to have hit rock bottom under embattled coach Ralph Friedgen, who definitely will be fired if the Terps have another 2-10 (1-7 in ACC) season. Maryland is 60/1 this season to win the ACC on Bodog’s college football odds and 11/1 to win the Atlantic Division.

That 10-loss season was the worst in school history at Maryland and since going 10-3 in 2003 this program is 35-40. The offense was terrible last season, especially when 2008 All-ACC tailback Da’Rel Scott broke his arm. Maryland was 102nd in the nation in total offense, averaging just 316.4 yards per game. The running game averaged just 105.8 yards, 105th in the country. But that should be much better with Scott healthy again. The Terps do have to replace two-year starting QB Chris Turner, with Jamarr Robinson taking over. He gives the team a running threat and saw some significant action at the end of last season, completing 54.1 percent of his passes for 459 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 4.3 yards per carry. Maryland will have more of an option look on offense this year with Robinson, although the Terps certainly won’t ignore stud WR Torrey Smith. Overall seven starters return on offense.

The defense was also pretty bad last year, finishing last in the ACC in scoring defense (31.3 ppg) and 105th nationally in pass efficiency defense. And 75 percent of the secondary has to be replaced, so things could get ugly again. Five starters are back on defense, led by senior LB Alex Wujciak, who has led the team in tackles the past two seasons.

Sept. 6 Navy Sept. 11 Morgan State Sept. 18 at West Virginia Sept. 25 Florida International Oct. 2 Duke Oct. 16 at Clemson Oct. 23 at Boston College Oct. 30 Wake Forest Nov. 6 at Miami Nov. 13 at Virginia Nov. 20 Florida State Nov. 27 NC State

Grandmaster Sports Handicapper Joe Duffy’s expert take: Say goodbye to Ralph Friedgen as Maryland head coach. The Terps will finish slower than a turtle, dead last in the ACC Atlantic Division.
